PROCESSING

Coffee Washing Station Project: Empowering Farmers and Communities

Kwezi Coffee Washing Station is located in Buginyanya, on the beautiful slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. Positioned at an altitude of 2,000 masl, the station processes our coffee using both washed and natural methods. Our CWS is equipped with coffee processing machinery, it efficiently processes coffee cherries. This includes reliable pulping machines for removing the outer skin of the coffee cherries, traditional fermentation tanks for precise flavour development, specially designed washing channels for thorough bean cleaning, and well-built drying tables for natural sun drying.

Capable of processing approximately 5 metric tons of coffee cherries per day, our station operates during the coffee harvesting season, typically from September to December.

Our dedicated team has received extensive training from experienced coffee processors and continues to refine their skills through hands-on experience in our facilities. As part of our commitment to the community, our station provides employment opportunities for local residents, contributes to the economic development of the region, and offers training and capacity-building programs to empower farmers and workers in coffee processing.

Investment in Uganda’s Coffee Future

Through a partnership with the USADF and Stanbic Uganda Accelerate Grant Program, we secured a substantial grant of USD 35,000. This collaborative effort aimed to construct a state-of-the-art coffee washing station in Kasese District, Western Uganda.

The primary objective of this project is to enhance coffee processing and value addition in the region. Over the course of two years, the following activities will be undertaken:

  • Construction of a fully equipped coffee washing station, featuring pulping, fermentation, washing, and drying facilities.
  • Establishment of storage warehouses and administrative offices to support the operations of the washing station.
  • Implementation of comprehensive training programs for local staff, focusing on coffee processing techniques, quality control, and management.
  • Integration of environmentally sustainable practices, including wastewater treatment systems and sustainable energy solutions.

This project wasn’t just about constructing a new facility; it was about helping local farmers and boosting the local economy. Over two years, our work has led to some impressive results. Our coffee washing station has made a big difference to the quality of coffee produced by over 1000 local farmers. By giving them access to better processing facilities, we’ve helped them improve the quality of their coffee beans. This means they can now sell their coffee for better prices and reach new markets.

By running the washing station, we’ve created jobs for 100 women and young people in the local area. Through training and support, we’re helping them build better futures for themselves and their families.

Our Comprehensive Milling Process

Kwezi Coffee is dedicated to producing specialty, premium, and conventional coffee, using rigorous processing methods including washed and natural techniques. Sourced from nearly 3,000 farmers, our Arabica is harvested from August to November, and Robusta from April to June. After undergoing processing and drying, the coffee is ready for dry milling, maintaining high standards from field to cup.

Advanced Sorting and Grading: Our beans undergo advanced sorting using the latest mechanical and optical sorting technologies, which classify the beans by size, weight, and colour. Following machine sorting, skilled workers conduct hand sorting to remove any defective beans, ensuring that only the highest quality beans are packaged.

Packaging Innovations: We use various bag types, including durable jute, polypropylene, or advanced GrainPro bags, chosen to meet specific storage and transportation needs and to maintain coffee quality from the farm to the consumer. Each bag is carefully weighed, sealed, and labelled to ensure freshness and flavour are preserved until it reaches our customers.

State-of-the-Art Storage Facilities: Our storage facilities in Mbale town are optimised for coffee preservation, with controlled temperatures and humidity levels maintained between 15°C to 25°C and 50% to 60% humidity, respectively. These conditions are perfect for retaining the sensory characteristics of the coffee and preventing quality degradation due to environmental factors.

Pest Control and Maintenance: Comprehensive pest control measures are in place, including regular cleanings, the strategic placement of traps and baits, and the sealing of potential entry points to protect our coffee from pests. We monitor regularly and respond swiftly to any signs of pest activity to uphold our high-quality standards.

Commitment to Quality and Sustainability: Our operations ensure that coffee beans are stored only for short periods to maintain quality. Regular quality checks help identify any potential issues quickly, allowing for prompt action. We are deeply committed to sustainability, promoting fair trade practices, supporting smallholder farmers, and implementing eco-friendly initiatives throughout our supply chain.
